Incontinence - spontaneous leakage of urine

MUDr. Ondřej Gojiš, Ph.D.

Up to 40% of the female population after 65 years of age suffer from incontinence - urine leakage. It is a condition where a woman is unable to control urinary retention, and on this basis the urine flows spontaneously. She is thus limited in her social and sexual life. Recently, women at reproductive age have also been facing this problem, and one of the main reasons for this is the increasing age of women at first birth.

The most common type is stress incontinence / incontinence during running, exercise, lifting of heavy loads /, urgency incontinence / frequent need to urinate /.

In the Czech Republic, thanks to specialized facilities, the quality of treatment is very high. For a physician to correctly determine the diagnosis and type of incontinence, the patient undergoes a urodynamic examination, which is painless and performed within outpatient care. The treatment is usually conservative and involves physiotherapy, electrostimulation, or medication.

In the area of stress incontinence, we have the possibility of treatment in the form of an applied injection of hyaluronic acid along the urethra in local anesthesia, followed by vaginal strips inserted under the urethra and, of course, other urogynecological methods and surgical procedures, which can also solve the descent of pelvic organs.

However, the biggest problem in this field of medicine remains the feeling of embarrassment, which is, unfortunately, the main reason that most women come to the urogynecology clinic too late.

Try to overcome your embarrassment and get examined by an expert physician in time. Only then can your problem can be solved to your satisfaction without unnecessary complications.
